We were so excited. It would be our trip, our dream trip, and it had started.  It was very late when we arrived to Keflavik airport, 5:00 am exactly. We went to Rent.is office and took our camper van. They were our first kilometers in Iceland and we started going from Keflavik to Akranes and Borgarnes, visiting different little towns and landscapes.  Our first surprise was when we arrived to Snæfellsnes and could see seals. It was amazing to see those animals so close.  Then we continue our route, but it was 9:00 pm and we stopped to prepare the dinner and sleep.

Our first experience with the camper van was perfect. The “little kitchen” was enough to cook whatever we wanted and the bed was better than we expected, bigger and more comfortable. Because of that and thanks to the good temperature we slept very well.

Our Super Camper Van

The second day had started. We climbed to our first crater Saxhóll. Not very high but enough to enjoy the sights.  Driving on the Icelandic roads was really easy, always paying attention on the sheep, controlling the speed and the strong wind. The day was ending, and we arrived to Hvammstangi (seals town). We spent the night next to the sea, surrounded by stars.

The night was very cold and we had to switch on the heating. Thanks to it we could to sleep very well.  Next day we visited the little and special town, Glaumbær. Those little “elf houses” remind me to some Disney films, such as, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Then we continue our route and we arrived in Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland. Then, we were in the central north of the country.  Driving through the coast, surprisingly we arrived to a little village Dalvik. There were a lot of people and the principal road was closed for the cars. There was a big party in the harbor! (editor’s note: It’s called The Great fish day)
So we went there, we like party! There were two big music concerts and apart from that people from Dalvik were handing out food. The principal ingredient was fish, for example, fish hamburger, fried fish with potato sauce, fish and chips…

That was a big surprise for us, and a very good experience!

Then we took the camper again and went to Akureyri. One thing that Iceland has and we liked it too much is that all towns, it doesn’t matter if it is big or small, have a hot swimming pools or “hot-pots”. The experience in those hot waters is very relaxing and for us the best way to finish the day. Because of that we went to Akureyri’s “hot-pot”. We recommend it.

We couldn’t wait for the next day. We had booked a whale watching experience in Húsavik. We started driving from Akureyri to Húsavik, but we did a little stop in Goðafoss, “Waterfall of the gods“. It’s is spectacular.  Finally we arrived to Húsavik, boarded our fast boat and we went to see big whales. During the trip we saw Puffins. Puffins are little birds, with black and white plumage and orange beak. Next to Húsavik there is a little island and its name is Puffin Island. Why? Because there are a lot of those little birds.  Then we went to find these big animals, and we did it. It is fascinating to see humpback whales next to you, breathing and sucking very strongly, and going up and down in that cold Iceland water. It was an unforgettable experience.

Continuing with our road trip we went to Mývatn Nature Baths. It was very cold outside, but submerged in the water it was different. We could relax in the alkaline bathing lagoon and enjoy the cloudy landscape. You can observe Mývatn Lake from the lagoon.  Next day we went to climb our first volcano Hverfell. There is a short gravel road to get there. We didn’t have any problem to get there with our camper van! But we saw a caravan with serious problems. In that moment we were very proud of our choice, our camper van for 2 people, Renault Kangoo Camper.

Then we visited Hverir, Kafla, Viti, and finally we arrived to Egilsstaðir. There are a lot of kilometers from Viti to Egilsstaðir. It is a desert like and volcanic landscape, but those orange, yellow and brown colors of this land is worth seeing.

Next day we travel through fjords Reydarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Berufjörður and finally we arrived to glaciers zone. We had booked an excursion on the glacier. We went there, wore a helmet and harness, mounted crampons and ice ax and started climbing the glacier thanks to a very good and nice mountain guide. The experience was very good, it is exciting to walk on ice.
Our journey was coming to an end, and we were arriving to the south of the island. Finding on the way towns as wonderful as Vik, surrounded by endless black volcanic beaches. Walking endless miles through that dark desert to reach the chilling abandoned Cold War American plane.

Camping in Vik in Mýrdal

Continue seeing more and more waterfalls, all different. High, low, wide, narrow, with more or less flow. Getting wet after walking behind the Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

Hengifoss waterfall

It was our last day in Iceland, and we wanted to seize the day. We visited the spectacular Geysir, Gullfoss and of course, Þingvellir. That is, the so-called Golden circle.
We could not leave Iceland without visiting its capital Reykjavik. So we did. We parked in the center of the capital and visited the original church and the Harpa building and the port. We liked it a lot, especially because it is a different city style comparing with all the other European capitals we know about.

Concluding, our trip to Iceland in camper van has been fantastic. The fact that we have chosen the camper van as our transport vehicle to travel around Iceland and at the same time being our lodging during the trip, has been a success.  We are certainly very proud of our choice and our experience. And therefore, we recommend to all who read our history as all our acquaintances to rent a camper van with Rent.is.
Thank you for helping make our dream come true.
