A road trip with a friend

By Nicolás De Vicente

Camperstory Submission November 2024

Our road trip began on a hot day in Madrid, more than 5.000 km from Reykjavík. After a summer without vacations working as a journalist on the Soccer Euro Cup and the Paris Olympics, photos of some friends who had taken the opportunity to visit Iceland appeared on my phone and my social media.

The mix i felt was half of admiration and half of envy. I must admit, that’s why I told one of my best friends that he should sign up for this adventure.

It didn’t take me long to convince him because we had all already heard incredible stories from other friends who had traveled to Iceland before. Only a few hours later we already had the plane ticket in our pockets and we were looking at the other big decision: How to get around the country?

Everyone told us that the best option was to rent a van and travel with it. So we choose to enjoy that independence and the feeling of freedom that multiplies when visiting such wild landscapes.

We had never had an experience like this, but now I can say that it was the best decision we made. We decided to consult the Rent.is website because the references were very good and we felt in love when we start to study the diferent options . Only a few weeks later we were behind the steering Sherlock  of our  house on wheels that was going to serve us as transportation and also  shelter for us these days.

My doubt was if we could be cold and I now can answer that not at all. It was easy to get connectes at each of the campsites we went to and I can assure you that the warm clothes I brought to sleep stayed in my backpack and every night I slept as if I were at home.

Regarding the route I can only add that for a moment we felt like the protagonists of an epic movie or an episode of Game of Thrones, the landscapes are truly spectacular.

We go from the ice white of the glaciers to the black beaches of the south, also passing through the incredible green canyons or the volcanic meadows. It is incredible to see so much variety within the same country.

And we still needed one more color, but this time it was not in the landscape. It was in the sky because  we were lucky enough to see the famous northern lights.

Well, I would rather say that they enveloped us in a time that I can assure you has a lot of magic, and yes, the correct word is magic.

The glaciers impressed me .That white cloak that does not end where the gaze ends. The sound of ice when you walk over those white, frozen meadows its something i ll never forget

Our trip was focused on the south of the country. Since we arrived in the country, we traveled the roads to the south and west. Of course we were also able to visit the north and it is difficult to say which part might impress you but preparing the trip is already a way of traveling so from here I invite you to start looking at options.

The beauty of the waterfalls needs a separate chapter. It is impressive to see the number of them that appear on the sides of the road and they are all spectacular. We have seen many and that does not mean that they have failed to impress us.

The force with which the water falls is mixed with that effect that hypnotizes you. It is a mixture of strength and beauty. I think that no matter how much I try to describe it, the best thing is that you stand next to one of those waterfalls and let yourself be infected by the energy they give off and I would say that they are even contagious.

I remember publishing photos and videos having the feeling that I was not able to fully capture the beauty of the landscape. However, the messages I received from my family and friends were of absolute admiration. My mobile phone is packed with photos that I find spectacular and that I never tire of reviewing.

As I write these lines, memories come to mind of visiting the famous plane on the sand of a beach. I have seen sessions by famous DJs such as the Italian Meduza there and now was my time to be there

I have also seen Justin Bieber’s video clip with some of the most beautiful places in the country. Not to mention the number of times these landscapes have been the setting for films as spectacular as Interstellar. It’s literal, in Iceland it’s even easy to find yourself on a movie set

Traveling through Iceland has been an experience that I will never forget. I have been lucky enough to visit many countries around the world, but in few places like here have I felt so impressed. Its people were always kind and polite to us and it has also been very interesting to be able to meet travelers from other parts of the world.  We were surprised to see how couples of friends came from distant countries in Asia or from several different corners of America. Traveling in a van has allowed us to share very interesting times with other travelers

Regarding my experience with my friend Álvaro, I can only say that the fact of traveling in a van has brought us together even more friendship

My feeling was as if was an actor of a road movie. Almost as if we were Thelma and Louise in that famous movie. The moments on the road sharing songs and also confidences where part of this trip. We had never had an experience like this and I can only say that I recommend it. Visiting Iceland like this makes it even more interesting.

Reykjavík surprised us with its colorful streets where we were able to spend just over 24 hours. We enjoyed the famous hot dogs that are reputed to be the best in the world and we got lost in its streets while we looked at the shop windows and filled our suitcases with gifts for our people.

I would not want to finish this text without making one last reflection. Traveling enriches you. Seeing the world makes you expand your own borders and learn to enjoy other cultures and other landscapes. Traveling is always an investment. An investment in yourself. Making those memories that we can always return to and that make us smile. I would summarize this idea by saying that traveling makes you feel alive.  And Iceland has made us feel very alive. If you have been there, I am sure you understand what I mean and if you have not yet made the decision to visit Iceland, allow me a thing… do not delay. You won’t forget it
